Crouton vs Paprika: The Beautiful One or the One That Runs Everywhere?

Crouton and Paprika are the two recipe managers people who cook from their own collection end up choosing between. Both import, organise, scale and plan. The differences are platform, pricing shape and how much they care about the moment you are actually at the stove. Facts below are current as of our last check; both apps change prices by region, so confirm in the store before buying.

Crouton: what you get

Crouton is iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. The free tier holds a limited number of recipes; Plus unlocks unlimited recipes and the extras for a one-time $24.99 ($17.99 early bird at the time of writing). Since Combustion Inc. acquired it in April 2025, the AI import from photos and PDFs and the Discover feed sit in a separate subscription at $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year. The cook mode is the reason to buy: one step per screen, timers pulled from the text, ingredients pinned, all in a layout that looks like it was designed rather than generated. Paprika: what you get

Paprika Recipe Manager 3 is bought once per platform: $4.99 on iOS, $29.99 each for Mac and Windows, and free up to 50 recipes on Android with a $4.99 unlock. Sync through Paprika Cloud is free and unlimited. The in-app browser clips almost any recipe page into clean fields, it scales and converts, plans on a calendar, builds the grocery list and works offline. Price over time

One Apple device: Crouton Plus $24.99 once, or Paprika $4.99 once. Every Apple device: Crouton $24.99 covers them all; Paprika is $4.99 plus $29.99 for the Mac. Add Windows and Paprika is $29.99 more; Crouton is not available. Add the AI import on Crouton and it is a subscription again. Paprika is cheaper on a phone, Crouton is cheaper across a whole Apple household, and Paprika is the only option once a PC is involved.

At the stove

This is where Crouton wins clearly. Its cook mode is calmer, bigger and better at keeping the screen awake and the step in front of you. Paprika's cook view works, with timers and pinned ingredients, but it feels like reading a recipe rather than being walked through one.

What neither does

Both assume you already have the recipe. Neither will tell you what to make from the chicken and half a cabbage in your fridge, size it to you, or plan a week you can shop from without recipes on hand. That is a different kind of app. Pann does that job and then cooks with you; keep Crouton or Paprika for the collection and use Pann for the nights the collection has no answer.
