Mealie vs Paprika: Run Your Own Recipe Server, or Just Buy the App?

Mealie comes up in every recipe app thread with the same sentence: it is free and you own it. Both are true. Mealie is an open source recipe manager and meal planner that you run yourself, usually in Docker on a home server or a cheap VPS, and use from any browser. Paprika is a paid app you install and forget. The comparison is really a question about you: do you want to run a server for your recipes? For most people the honest answer is no, and Paprika wins. For the people who already do, Mealie is excellent.

What Mealie is

Mealie imports a recipe from a URL and pulls ingredients, steps and the photo automatically, organises the collection with tags and cookbooks, plans meals on a calendar and keeps a shopping list sorted by section. It supports several users, so a household shares one library with separate logins, which the paid apps mostly do not. It runs in Docker with a compose file and a setup wizard; the SQLite build suits a family, the PostgreSQL build suits bigger groups. There is no App Store app: you use it in a browser or add the web app to your home screen. It costs nothing beyond the machine it runs on.

What Paprika is

Paprika Recipe Manager 3 is a native app for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows, bought once per platform ($4.99 on iOS, $29.99 on desktop, Android free to 50 recipes with a $4.99 unlock). The web clipper is the best in the category, scaling and timers are built in, it works fully offline, and sync between your own devices is free. It is one account, so a partner shares your login. Where Mealie wins

• Free, forever, for any number of devices, because it is a website you own.
• Real multi-user accounts: everyone in the house has their own login on one shared library.
• You control the data completely; it never leaves your machine unless you decide.
• The URL import handles hundreds of recipe sites and improves with every release.

Where Paprika wins

• Fifteen seconds to install versus an evening to set up, plus the updates and backups you now own.
• Native apps: offline in a kitchen with bad wifi, share sheet clipping on the phone, a cook view that keeps the screen on.
• Scaling, unit conversion and timers pulled from the step text.
• No server to keep alive. If your box goes down, so do your recipes on Mealie.

Who should self-host

If the words Docker, compose and reverse proxy are things you already have opinions about, Mealie is a genuinely good use of that server and you will not miss Paprika. If you would be installing your first container to store recipes, you are buying a hobby, not a recipe app, and Paprika's $4.99 is the better deal. What neither solves

Both store recipes you already have. Neither will look at the half a cabbage in your fridge and tell you what to make, size it to you, or talk you through it.
