Yummly Shut Down: 6 Alternatives and What to Do Now

If you have landed here because the Yummly app will not open, the answer is short and unwelcome: it is not broken, it is gone. Yummly shut down permanently on 20 December 2024. The website and both mobile apps went dark on the same day, and yummly.com now simply redirects to KitchenAid's recipe pages, which have no accounts, no saved recipes and no meal planner behind them.

That matters more than a normal app closure, because for a lot of people Yummly was not one app among several. The Yum button had spent a decade collecting recipes from every food blog they had ever liked, and that collection was the point. Below is what happened, and then six alternatives grouped by which part of Yummly you are actually missing.

What Actually Happened

The end was slower and quieter than most people realised.

1. Yummly was founded in October 2008 and grew into a recipe search engine with a catalogue of roughly two million recipes aggregated from blogs and publishers.
2. Whirlpool acquired it in May 2017. Terms were never disclosed.
3. On 3 April 2024 Whirlpool laid off the Yummly team, reported at around 75 people. The service then ran with nobody behind it for eight months.
4. On 26 November 2024 users got an email announcing the discontinuation, with a limited export window.
5. On 18 December 2024 the Smart Thermometer app stopped working, and on 20 December 2024 the website and apps went offline for good.

First, Work Out Which Yummly You Used

Yummly did four quite different jobs, and no single app replaces all of them. Pick the one that describes you and skip the rest.

• You saved recipes from all over the web and wanted them in one place. You want a recipe manager.
• You searched with allergy and diet filters and trusted the results. You want filtered search.
• You opened it to answer what is for dinner. You want something that decides.
• You mostly used the auto-generated shopping list. You want a list app.

If You Want to Own a Recipe Library Again

This is the biggest group, and the lesson from Yummly should shape the choice: pick something that stores recipes locally or exports them properly, so you are never in this position again.

• Paprika Recipe Manager 3 is the safe answer. A one-time purchase per platform (iOS $4.99, Mac and Windows $29.99, Android free up to 50 recipes then a $4.99 unlock), sync included at no extra cost, and every recipe stored on your device so it works offline. If You Miss the Filtered Search

This is the hardest part to replace honestly. Yummly's allergy and diet filtering applied across two million recipes at once, and nothing else has quite that combination of catalogue size and filter depth.

If You Really Just Wanted Someone to Decide

Worth being honest about this one, because a lot of Yummly use looked like search and was actually avoidance. Opening an app with two million recipes at six in the evening is not a shortcut to dinner, it is a longer version of standing in front of the fridge.

If It Was Really the Shopping List

AnyList is the obvious move. Shared lists, real-time check-off and automatic categorisation are all free, with no ads, and AnyList Complete is $9.99 a year for an individual or $14.99 for a household if you want the meal planner and the desktop apps. In German-speaking Europe, Bring has the stronger network effect if the point is sharing a list with people who already use it.

The Question Underneath

Most people did not lose a tool when Yummly closed, they lost a filing cabinet they had been filling for years and rarely opened. It is worth asking how many of those saved recipes you ever cooked. If the honest answer is a handful, the replacement you need is not a bigger cabinet.
